Songs of the season... Today is International Mountain Day--the day designated to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development. Not to be confused with Mountain Day at some colleges in the US, where the student body, without warning, all--literally--head for the hills (or parks) for the day. My family come from the mountains. On both of my parents sides, we have Swiss ancestors who lived and died in the mountains and valleys of the Alps. Both sides left these mountains for, ultimately, the Rocky Mountains of North America. My moms family is from the Snake River Plain, with the Taylor Mountains to the east and the Lost River Range and the Sawtooths to the west, across the massive expanse of sagebrush and sand dunes. My dads family is from the Jackson Hole, with the majestic Tetons towering immediately to the west. Growing up, I spent 6 years in the shadow of Tahoma--Mt. Rainier--and the Cascade Range. (For years, whenever asked to draw a mountain as a child, it was Mt. Rainier that I drew.) We are mountain people. We are accustomed to having something to gaze up towards, to get our bearings, to see where were going. And somewhere from which to see where we have come. And so, on International Mountain Day, a traditional carol performed by another mountain person, Dolly Parton of the Appalachian Mountains. Go Tell It on the Mountain. ____ Go, Tell It On The Mountain While shepherds kept their watching Over silent flocks by night, Behold throughout the heavens, There shone a holy light: Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. The shepherds feared and trembled When lo! above the earth Rang out the angel chorus That hailed our Saviours birth: Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. Down in a lowly manger Our humble Christ was born And God send us salvation, That blessed Christmas morn: Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. When I am a seeker, I seek both night and day; I seek the Lord to help me, And He shows me the way: Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. He made me a watchman Upon the city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all. Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Over the hills and everywhere; Go, Tell It On The Mountain That Jesus Christ is born. https://youtube/watch?v=3nPFUh4j2OM
