Sony Hack Adds to Security Pressure on Companies Associated Press (12/19/14) McDonald, Joe; Lee, Youkung; Kurtenbach, Elaine; et al. The recent cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment may actually have a positive impact on cybersecurity efforts at companies around the world because it could encourage executives to spend more money on security, says Chester Wisniewski of the security firm Sophos. According to Wisniewski, technicians could persuade executives to spend more money on cybersecurity by noting that the cyberattack against Sony Pictures Entertainment shows what can happen to a company when it is the victim of a security breach. Efforts to improve cybersecurity could include turning to third parties for help. Kwon Seok-chul, the president of the South Korean security firm Cuvepia, says his company is seeing growing interest from a variety of businesses who want help implementing new types of cybersecurity defenses. Kwon adds that some of these companies are shifting their strategies away from stopping cybersecurity breaches to limiting losses in the event a breach occurs. However, officials at some small companies may not be motivated to improve their cybersecurity efforts because they believe that their companies will never be targeted in the way a large company like Sony Pictures Entertainment or Target was, Wisniewski says.
