Sooooo, X-Men review, longer than normal. No explicit spoilers ahead, but inferred if you are a comic book fan. You have been warned. First off, its amazing, so that could be the end of it. However, this is such a unique situation. DofP had to do more than bring casts together from a series separated by 10 years, and what many considered a reboot. It had to improve on First Class, which I felt was a solid movie with a few miscues/miscasts, AND erase the sour taste of X3. It does both. The mutant selection in DofP is much better, Quicksilver is incredible, simply awesome. I was worried after the marketing blitz for him, but its just spot on. I enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence in this one, where I wasnt a fan in First Class. The future mutants were well selected, and the past mutant cast was trimmed to just the meat, and it performed perfectly. There was never a scene where I questioned the motivation of a character, or a moment that bored me. Even a corny Nixon impersonation couldnt take me out of the 70s motif; if anything it enhanced it. Not only does it improve on First Class, but haters of X3 (myself VERY much included) will be pleased to know that it erases many of the miscues of that movie, and pretty much functions as a 2 hour Im Sorry for Ratner. I know people are clamoring for Fox to give up its movie rights, but I think in the case of X-Men, that would be a mistake. This series just jumped up to top tier, and the stinger at the end of the credits shows how epic this is about to get. I feel that a lot of audience members were cheated out of that epicness by their comic knowledge, as I heard audible confusion. Trust me, if youre a fan of some of the biggest X-Men baddies, youll be pumped. Now the ASM rights, Fox should drop, cause that was shite. But this, this needs to keep going indefinitely, or until Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart pass, in each others arms as fate intended. At the ripe old age of 247.
