Sooooo the saying you can only adjust the speed to the distance I have been looking at various Xc videos Galway , Tx Rose etc , and to see people galloping at jumps regardless that they are completely wrong is so dangerous . Riding fast Xc takes skill and practice and the ability to see a distance , I saw one quote from a lower level authority stating just have a balanced canter and it will all work out !! Wrong !! Its rather hard work teaching distances but imperative for the safety of horse and rider , as I saw this rider miss at 7 out of the 20 jumps crash through the ditch at the coffin and watch the poor horse limp on swishing his tail all the way , I wondered why people think our horses deserve this ? We have an obligation to put the horses welfare first , remember the rider chose to go Xc the horse had no choice . If you received a ribbon after missing so badly , you do not move up you were lucky ! The endless desperate riders that go to Kentucky ...... I have to get there !!! I cant see distances so I will ride faster so we dont stop ! This is the thought process that ruins our sport , learn and become accomplished , then move up , your will thank you :)
