Sorry about the delay on this one, already had people wondering what happend or if they missed it. So, to make up for the tardiness, I wrote a novel of opinions, enjoy. A huge win for the Chiefs this Sunday ending a long streak of losses to the Chargers. There were several highs and lows for this game for our Chiefs. I felt like the defense played very well against the league’s leading passer. Even with the losses of Derrick Johnson, Mike Devito, Eric Berry, Chris Owens, and Joe Mays, the defense held strong. I was particularly impressed with Phillip Gaines yesterday. I was assuming that Rivers would pick him out and he would get burned by every receiver, instead he made some very solid defends, one in particular in the endzone that would have given the Chargers and even greater lead. I have also been very happy with the way Josh Mauga has been playing this year. If I remember correctly Mauga has been leading our team in tackles so far this year. He continued to do more of the same on Sunday and showed some “Johnson-like” skills getting penetrating through the line stopping the run as well as helping defend the pass up the middle. The lows for that game were obviously with the offense. The Chiefs continue their streak of ZERO touchdowns from a wide receiver. We can all see why from their performance Sunday. Two huge opportunities were blown by Hemingway and Bowe. Both receivers had passes thrown perfectly to them, hit their hands, and slide right through. Most people already know I hate Dwayne Bowe and this just proves my point. Why is he getting paid so much when he keeps dropping wide open passes like he has been? Another point I think may have hurt us was that Reid didn’t run very many 2 or three tight end sets for a pass. He used these sets for a lot of the running plays of the day but didn’t have Smith target their most productive receivers, primarily Travis Kelce. It worked out in the end but it seemed strange to shy away from what had been working quite well. More low points came from the officiating of the game. I’m curious how much San Diego paid these guys to try and screw the Chiefs. The refs were so inconsistent on calls when it came to pass defense. The Chiefs got called as soon as a defender touched the receiver which they can do in limitation, while the Chargers were already wrapping around our receivers before the ball gets to them and never got called. Another notable call was on Anthony Fasano. If I remember right it was a pass interference call on Fasano, who wasn’t the intended receiver, had both his arms up, and was being held and pulled around by the defender. Even the announcers couldn’t figure out the call. Even when working against the refs, the Chiefs pulled out a win. One last notable from the game is Jamaal Charles. Charles made a big run to score the Chiefs first touchdown of the game, and collided with former teammate Brandon Flowers. With that run Charles beat Priest Holmes by one yard for the Chiefs franchise career rushing yards total. Also, Santos didn’t miss!
