Soul Chat “Hospice care; why wait?” I’ve been - TopicsExpress

Soul Chat “Hospice care; why wait?” I’ve been thinking about why some people seem to feel hesitant to begin hospice care. Why does it seem like a difficult decision? I have experienced being a part of this decision for both my father and then my mother. Perhaps our inner feelings of resistance are rooted in a stigma. Namely, that starting hospice care means we are resigning ourselves to a certain and speedy death. Historically, the thought has been that someone on hospice care has little or no meaningful life left. Subconsciously we can think that in order to live longer and better, hospice is something to be avoided. It is natural to want to avoid something we would rather not face. The actual facts show, that people with hospice care, in their time of need, live longer and better. Quite a few hospice patients are discharged because they improve so much with the good care that they no longer qualify for the services. In short, when hospice services are appropriate to be offered, there is every advantage to make use of them now. Hospice care does not shorten life, but it improves it and may even lengthen it. I have heard doctors say so. Hospice care; why wait?
