South West Women’s Football League – Division 1 (West) Sunday 26th October 2014 Illogan (2) Vs Callington Town (4) EXCELLENT WIN COMES AT A COST FOR TOWN The shine was taken off this excellent away win for Callington as the game saw the visitors lose three influential players to injury. All the goals came in the second half but they were worth the wait as all six were expertly taken. The first half was mainly contested in midfield but the away side thought they’d taken the lead when Imogen Cooper harassed the home keeper, pinched the ball just outside the box and shot narrowly off target with the goal at her mercy. Town then lost some of their attacking impetus when pacey forward Sarah Winn was forced off with a knee injury. Meanwhile at the other end, Kate Bourn was deputising in goal for the absent Sara Rowe. Despite a fairly quiet first half, Bourn handled a few routine saves in confident fashion. Just before the break, Callington’s injury woes worsened as a hamstring injury to Grace O’Leary meant she could no longer continue. The injuries saw substitutes Peyton-Rose Ringham and Paige Keenan introduced before half-time. The second half started well for the visitors as Cooper played in her strike partner, Gemma Farley, before she calmly passed the ball into the far corner to give her side the lead. The joy was short-lived however as Illogan’s response was a neat passing move which ended with Debbie Duncan finishing neatly over the head of Bourn. Callington regained the lead mid-way through the second half when Farley fired home a 30 yard free kick. Once again though Illogan responded to draw level. This time Jasmine Liptrott smashed in a great volley from the edge of the box. Illogan felt they should have had a penalty on the hour mark but the referee adjudged Emma Anderson’s sliding challenge as a fair one. Despite animated protests from the home support, the referee confirmed that Anderson had won the ball fairly. The pattern of the game then resumed with Town regaining the lead on 70 minutes. Midfielder Jodie Shipton skipped past two challenges before firing a long-range shot over the keeper. Shortly after, Callington sealed the win with another brilliant 20 yard effort. This time it was Keenan who pinched the ball off an Illogan defender before letting fly with a thunderbolt finish. With just minutes remaining, Callington lost yet another player to injury. An accidental elbow in midfield resulted in Shipton heading off to A&E to have six stitches for a deep cut to her head. After the game, Town manager Adam McPherson commented: “It wasn’t our best footballing performance of the season but the quality of the goals was great to see. The sour note was losing three players when we already had numbers missing on the day. But the depth of our squad meant that we were still able to push for the win. All the girls were determined not to simply settle for a point.” Player of the match was shared between Bourn for an assured performance in goal and Farley who is now Town’s current leading goal-scorer.
