“Sovereign Citizen” Sentenced to Six Months in Jail HUNTINGDON (June 18) Judge Donald Parish sentenced a Huntingdon woman on three charges of violation of state law as it relates to operating a motorized vehicle in Tennessee. Elizabeth Williams El of Huntingdon was sentenced to six months in jail, all suspended except 90 days for her conviction of driving on a suspended driver’s license. She will remain on probation for the remainder of the sentence. She was additionally sentenced 30 days incarceration to run concurrent on a conviction of driving without registration of a vehicle. Miss Williams El was fined the maximum of $500 on the suspended conviction, $50 on the registration, and $100 on the violation of the financial responsibility law. In a Carroll County courtroom, a 12-person jury took about 15 minutes to sentence Williams El, a member of the sovereign citizen’s movement. She was convicted of similar offenses by a jury in Huntingdon on February 3rd of this year. According to Wikipedia, “the sovereign citizen movement is a loose grouping of American litigants, commentators, tax protesters and financial scheme promoters. Self-described sovereign citizens take the position that they are answerable only to common law and are not subject to any statutes or proceedings at the federal, state, or municipal levels, or that they do not recognize U.S. currency and that they are free of any legal constraints.’” See the June 24 issue of The McKenzie Banner for complete details of the trial.
