Soyinka Raises Eye-Brow On Corruption - ICPC Set to Partner Pyrates to Combat it - Osuagwn Lashes Govt. In the course of advocating for the sustainable measures to curb it in Nigeria, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt practices Commission (ICPC), Ekpo Nta Esq. have pledge the readiness of his institution to partner with the national Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) to fight corruption out of the shores of Nigeria. The ICPC boss made this known during a lecture organized by the seadogs to commemorates the 79th birthday of their live patron, Prof. Wole Soyinka on the theme, ‘Ethical deficit, Corruption and Challenges of Nation Building in the 21st Century Nigeria’. At the 16th annual Prof. Wole Soyinka Lecture Series held recently at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resorts, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, Barr. Ekpo Nta spoke extensively on the effect of greed as a foundational base of corruption in the society and identifies the need for ethical re-orientation in Nigeria. He urged women to serve as watch dogs to their husband, by be interested on the source of wealth of their husband before proceeding for thanks-giving. Nta while reacting to the discussants; the chairman of Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Udom esq., Dr. Chris Ekong of the University of Uyo, Dr. Ndubisi Osuagwn of the University of Calabar revealed that under-development in the educational sector is the root cause of examination malpractices. He noted that the culprit to this tendencies are mostly from schools that lacks necessary facilities like up-to-date libraries, science laboratories and art studios. He thereby called on the proprietors of the institutions (private and government) to rise to the challenge as a measure to curb examination malpractices in their schools. Dr. Osuagwn while making his comment condemn in totality governance by bill-board that is much gaining popularity in Nigeria today. He described a situation whereby a bill-board that carries the face of a governor and his development strides are being planted at the un-developed part of the society as unfortunate. He urge the citizens to stop celebrating public servants that uses our available resources to develop the society as if they using their personal money. He pointed out that developing the society is the constitutional duties of every elected representative, as such demands no praise singing as the case is today. Dr. Osuagwa also suggested ‘name and shame’ as a measure in combating corruption. This implies that the name of the individual involve in the corrupt act should be published with necessary details relating to his or her family, schools attended, village and religious affiliations. While Mr. Paul Udom was particularly happy with the judiciary in their fight against corruption as they retired two federal high court justices and de-rope four lawyers. Dr. Chris Ekong was so concerned about Nigeria emerging as the 8th most corrupt nation in the world despite the establishment of anti-corruption agencies, which in turn have persecuted many over corruption. The lecture which was chaired by the executive director of Mobil Producing Nigeria, Barr. Udom Uko Inoyo came to an apex when Prof. Wole Soyinka showed his dismay over the high level of corruption in the society. Soyinka revealed that although Seadogs is not a government agency which should have political power, or should control public funds or structures, that it will not relent it efforts in a fight for a corrupt free society. He therefore urged the pyrates in particular and Nigerians in general to be involved positively in transforming Nigeria from bleak to bliss. Meanwhile, the 16th edition of this annual lectures was preceded by the NAS Free Medical Mission, which was declared open last Thursday at the entrance of the Uyo Township stadium by the honourable commissioner in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, Dr. Ememabasi Bassey. The commissioner who was represented by the director of medical services, Dr. Adiaha-Akpan commended the contribution of the association and urged others to emulate the worthy example of NAS in rendering meaningful services to humanity and society. In a chat with the president of NAS world-wide, Mr.Ide Owodiond idemeko, he noted that the association is an intellectually grounded association with humanlities ideas, and that the free medical service always precedes their quarterly meetings. He noted that the 3rd Charity Red Ball with the theme’ The Cause, Voluntary for the Education of the Street Child’ is designed to raise fund to assist other highly spirited agencies and organizations to sweep over 6 million children off the street to schools for the betterment of the nation in future.
