Space 4 Art, in partnership with Community Development - TopicsExpress

Space 4 Art, in partnership with Community Development Corporation/BAME) and the King-Chavez High School, has been awarded a grant from the San Diego Foundations Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement (with a supplemental grant from the Synergy Art Foundation) for our Focus on Imperial Ave grant proposal. (We were voted as one of the top 5 projects to be funded in the Great Neighborhood Challenge.) A three week intensive photography course this summer taught by Jessica Sledge will cover field research, documentary photography, history, critical theory, styles of writing and photographic technology. Visual stories that highlight unique public spaces and relationships in the community will be enlarged and printed on large banners to be installed on the outside walls of participating buildings on Imperial Avenue. Participating students will earn community service credit. This collaboration benefits everyone involved. Local youth gain skills in art and technology and can positively impact their community. For local businesses, the banners will beautify the Imperial Ave commercial corridor and attract customers and visitors to the area. Artist/teachers with Space 4 Art will have the opportunity to work with a unique project that showcases how arts-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) education can be the basis for interesting, accessible public art. And participating artists will also be meeting their future neighbors when the permanent Space 4 Art is built on Market St in Sherman Heights. We look forward to continuing our partnership with BAME and the King-Chavez schools bringing STEAM TO THE STREETS- and are already planning future mural and performance projects! Please contact Cheryl Nickel at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering to help with this project or future STEAM projects.
