[Speaker dilemma - hypothetical] You are asked for feedback by a fellow speaker who says Give it to me straight. You watch them speak and send them this: You have enthusiasm, but youre far from being a real expert. Youre in the first stages of your career, and you need to do a lot more research. Alas, at present, youre the last speaker Id recommend on this topic. However, Im happy to offer advice, and recommend others to help you. They thank you for your honesty, and resolve to take your advice. A couple of months later, youre chatting to one of your best clients over coffee. He says I used to trust your judgement, but now Im not so sure. We booked a speaker based on your testimonial on a bureau website, and they turned out to be awful. What were you thinking? Puzzled, you check out the website of the bureau they mention, and find the details of the speaker to whom you gave feedback. Youre horrified to read this quote, with your name and photo beside it: A real expert. The first and last speaker Id recommend on this topic Its evident that your feedback has been heavily edited to say the opposite of what you intended. You dont know whether it was the work of the speaker or the bureau, and youre upset that your relationship with a good client has been damaged. What would you do?
