Speaking of Monument Valley, the 1956 John Ford classic, The Searchers, is on TCM tonight at 7 PDT. Its my favourite John Wayne movie, not only for its spectacular cinematography, but also for the Dukes superb performance as Civil War veteran Ethan Edwards, who spends years looking for his niece, Debbie (played first by Natalie Woods 9 year-old sister, Lana, then by 17 year-old Natalie herself), who had been abducted by Comanche Chief Cicatriz (Spanish for Scar) after killing her family. Throughout the movie Ethan says Thatll be the day!, which inspired Buddy Holly to write the song with that title. Liverpool band The Searchers took their name from the movie. The American Film Institute ranks the film as the #1 western of all-time.
