Special interest Article; Anthony J. Iantosca, BCFE IAFEI Statement Analysis Yesterday, I listened to a conversation between Scott Brown who I voted for a few years ago and Howie Carr on WRKO. Scott Brown is running for the Senate seat in New Hampshire. Scott Brown made a statement when asked by Howie about the Immigration Bill and how he would vote, Scott stated I really intend to work on this bill and get it squared away Something close to that statement. The words I heard were I really intend As soon as I heard his statement, I knew that it would be business as usual and nothing will get done. The word Really when not used as an intensifier to an Emotion Such as Daddy I really love my gift is a word that is a qualifier and weakens the statement being expressed. The word Really Is also a word that can be very deceptive when analyzing a statement when other deceptive markers are also found within a written or oral statement. For example when asked a question such as Do you ever use the back door? Answer, I really dont use the back door or Do you go to the casino? Answer, I really dont go to the casino This tells me yes, you do use the back door at times and yes, you do go to the casino at times. When pushed for a truthful answer to the question you asked, you will hear, well I do use the back door sometimes and I do go to the casino sometimes but not very often. A truthful answer to your question would be. No, I dont use the back door or No, I dont go to the casino The word intend is also a qualifier to his statement. People have great Intentions Such as I Intend to lose weight this new year or I Intend to start exercising more. Most times people fall short of their intentions. Remember the Shortest sentence is the best sentence and People mean exactly what they say Every word a person states in a written or oral statement has a meaning. The word Intend does not mean I will Scott Browns statement did not make me feel very confident about his work on the Immigration Bill. A better statement would have been, I will work on the Immigration Bill or I will uphold the laws and the Constitution of the United States concerning Immigration.
