Spent half the night up reading and thinking about licensure of interior designers in California and Im all for it! Every since graduating from 3 1/2 years of arguably the most rigorous and expensive training a PERSON can have, Ive had a 6 year identity crisis involving our title and hearing negative and even demeaning feedback about the interior design profession from the general public, mostly due to lack of knowledge. Needless-to-say it has been frustrating and confusing. This would not be too difficult to achieve in CA and would help to educate the public, further define scope of work for all players in the construction industry and elevate the profession. For clients, it would ensure they would be hiring folks with the minimum qualifications to practice. Essentially anyone could still call themselves interior decorators, but the title interior designer would be protected and only those who met the 3-Es (education, experience, examination) would be granted licensure.
