Spinal thought 171. The most superficial muscle at the front of the neck and throat is the Platysma. It is broad, flat muscle that originates from the fascia of pectoralis major and deltoid muscles, passes over the collarbone and slants upwards along the sides of the neck. It inserts along the lower border of the jaw and the skin and muscles of the mouth. Looks a bit like the front of a polo neck sweater from collarbone and top of shoulder to under the chin. It acts to draw down the jaw, and the angle of the mouth downward and tighten the skin of the neck. This can be seen for example when expressing surprise, fright or anger/aggression. When all the fibres of the muscles on both sides of the neck work at their maximum, the platysma widens the diameter of the neck. You can see this when people breath during intensive exercise, such as sprinting.
