St. Olaf Commission on Social Justice hosts Discussions That Encounter A dialogue on Race, Racism and White Privilege Thursday, August 22, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, Gathering Room Portia McClain, featured speaker Portia McClain is an educational specialist in language and cultur- al studies whose background includes African, African American, Native American, East Asian, and Jewish studies. At the Univer- sity of Minnesota and Concordia University, she educates faculty and students on how an understanding of culture and language can create a successful teaching environment in the classroom. Discussions That Encounter programs are held the second Thurs- day of each month, at Phillips Community Center, 2323 11th Ave. S., Minneapolis and the fourth Thursday of each month at St. Olaf. The objective of Discussions That Encounter is to raise awareness, establish relationships, and assist everyone in over- coming racism while providing education on historical and cur- rent topics. These discussions and educational events are sponsored free of charge to provide an environment where people from all walks of life and backgrounds can openly discuss any aspects of racism.
