Stalemate We elected them to represent us, And to uphold the ideology we embrace. But they lost sight of what was important, And not they’re trying to save face. Party politics requires that they hold ranks, At times logic, common sense they will ignore. They’ve never neglected caring for themselves, No wonder career politicians I’ve come to abhor. Compromise makes good marriages and nations, And it’s a good umbrella but a very poor roof. A half a bagel is better than no bagel. A little compromise, this nation’s not fail proof! Compromise is not a dirty, four letter word, At which politicians are usually are quite adept. Lately, they’ve elevated stubbornness to a virtue, As a result our legislative bodies are inept. Smallness of mind is the cause of stubbornness, Unyielding they pursue that narrow path. Getting their way is of principal importance, Ignoring the consequences and aftermath. Come, let us reason together, said Isaiah, It does nothing to impugn one’s integrity. Compromises make both sides victorious, But in today’s Washington it’s a rare peculiarity. M. T. Whallete © 2012
