Stand firm Revelation 2:13 (ERV) I know where you live. You live where Satan has his throne, but you are true to me. Meditation Pergamum is an ancient capital in Asia and one of the seven churches Christ spoke to through John’s writing in Revelation. Built on a cone-shaped hill rising 1,000 feet above the surrounding valley, its name in Greek means “citadel” and was the official center of emperor worship in Asia. Among the temples in Pergamum was one called Serapeum, erected to honor the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld—which may be one of many reasons why Christ gave the city the harrowing description found in today’s verse. Imagine how hard it would be to be a Christian there, yet they are recognized for their faithfulness to God in the midst of clear evil. Many modern-day believers in Jesus are serving today in places just as evil or even worse. They are constantly under the threat or imprisonment or death for their faith. They persevere because they know the truth in which they believe, and trust in it implicitly. Express praise to the Lord for the fortitude of your fellow Christians, and let their faith inspire you to stand firm against the darkness and evil you confront where you live. Prayer God, every day I’m bombarded by something wrong or sinful in Your sight. It can be discouraging, but lift me up so that I may oppose it through Your Word and in Your love. Amen.
