Standing Up for Educational Standards: Edmonton Physics teacher, Lynden Dorval, fired for giving zeros for incomplete work, has been completely vindicated, three years later. The Alberta Teacher Discipline Appeal Board ruled on August 29, 2014, that he had been unfairly treated and restored his lost salary and pension. Heres the back story: The Edmonton Journal news report explains what actually happened: The high schools computer program had been programmed by the Principal to enter blanks instead of teacher assigned zeros for missed assignments. “Therefore, as there was no accountability or penalty for a missing assignment in the new policy, there was little incentive for a student to actually complete the assignment,” the decision said. The veteran teacher with a 33-year unblemished record, simply refused to stop giving zeros, and so did two other teachers who went completely unpunished by the school principal. Dorval would enter a zero grade and show students how an incomplete assignment would drag down their grades, a successful technique that convinced students to hand their work in late, the decision said. “The evidence was that the use of a zero grade by the teacher was successful for him in encouraging his students to complete missed assignments,” said the written decision from the board of reference. “In fact, he had the best record in the school and perhaps in the province for completion rates.” The bottom line: The Edmonton School Board supports its principal, even when his actions and policies further degrade student learning.
