State Youth Science Fair 2012-13 to be organized under the aegis of Dept. of Youth Services, Govt. of West Bengal in collaboration with Depts. of School & Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal, West Bengal State Council of Science & Technology, Govt. of West Bengal & Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India) Introduction Dept. of Youth Services, Government of West Bengal shall organize ‘West Bengal State Youth Science Fair 2013’ to create interest among the state’s youth in science education and to foster scientific attitude, creativity and innovative practices in science & technology for national development. Format of the proposed APC Ray Science Fair The science fair shall be organized in a format as shown above. It will involve participation by school, college and university students throughout the state of West Bengal. Students will develop and present scientific models/exhibits/posters at the fair. While schools and UG colleges shall compete in the district level to qualify for participation in the state level competition, the PG level students from universities will participate directly in the state level fair in a separate category. In all, at the state level there will be four groups of participants, e.g. secondary school students, higher secondary school students, undergraduate college students and post graduate students from science from college/universities. Participation in District Level Science Fairs Schools and Colleges shall select the best scientific models/exhibits and posters made by students of their respective Institutions on prescribed themes and nominate one model/exhibit and /or one poster per group per school and one model/exhibit and /or one poster per college for participation in their respective district level science fair: a) Group 1: High School Students (Classes upto X) – (One model/Poster per school) b) Group 2: Higher Secondary Students (Classes upt0 XII) – (One model/Poster per school) c) Group 3: Science & Engineering College students (undergraduate level) –(One model/Poster from each college) Venue of District Level Fairs District Level Science Fairs shall be held in selected College campuses at various districts. Names and addresses of such colleges and the dates of District Level Fairs shall be finalized and intimated shortly by the respective District Science Fair Organizing Committees. Duration of District Level Fair The fair will continue for 2 days. The first day will be allotted for inauguration and exhibition purpose. The 2nd day will be earmarked for adjudging the entries of models & posters prepared as well as for closing ceremony. Deadline for Completion of District Level Fairs The district Fairs for both model/exhibit and poster categories must be completed by August 31st, 2013 and the names of the winners to be forwarded to the Dept. of Youth Services, Govt. of West Bengal (32/1, B. B. D. Bag. Kolkata – 700 001. E-mail id: educationbitm.rediffmail, fax no. 2243 7871) by September 02, 2013. Participation in the State Level Science Fair Competitive Entries (Schools and UG Level College Students) - Two winners (1st and 2nd) in each of the groups in model/exhibit category and one winner (1st only) in the poster category from the 19 district level fairs shall be selected for participation in the state level fair to be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium/ Kshudiram Anusilan Kendra, Kolkata during September 09 – 11, 2013. Direct Entries (PG Level Science Students) - Maximum 30 models/exhibits/mini research report in the form of poster display (one model/exhibit or one poster per university) on prescribed scientific themes will participate directly in the state level fair at Netaji Indoor Stadium/ Kshudiram Anusilan Kendra, Kolkata during September 09 – 11, 2013. However for the direct entry for the state level science fair, PG students from Universities and Colleges must submit a synopsis of their proposed models/exhibits/mini research report in the form of poster display duly forwarded by their respective Heads of Departments to the Director, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum. 19A, Gurusaday Road, Kolkata – 700 019. Maximum No. of Participants in District and State Level For school students: 2(two) students per model/exhibit and one student per poster plus maximum 1 (one) guide teacher per school. For college students: 2(two) students per model/exhibit and one student per poster. For University students: 2(two) students per model/exhibit or poster. Themes: 1. Agriculture. 2. Energy. 3. Health. 4. Environment. 5. Water. 6. Other relevant topic. Models / projects / posters which are relevant to the theme and are original works / contributions shall only be considered for participation. Poster Competition Rules for Poster Competition: Competitors should bring their posters on the date of competition. Use of Printed Photos is allowed. Posters should be handwritten (Bengali or English) Topic: Water Crisis & Management. Disaster Management. Size: A1 (not more than 23.4” X 33.1”). Awards / Prizes: Medals / Certificates for district level winners and cash awards, trophies and certificates for state level winners. District Level Science Fairs will be completed in every district of West Bengal within 31st August 2013. Selected models/Posters from each district will be invited to participate in West Bengal State Science Fair, which will be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium/ Kshudiram Anusilan Kendra, Kolkata during September 09 – 11, 2013. Participants Science Fairs for School Levels will be organized in two categories: Group 1: High School Students (Classes VII to X) Group 2: Higher Secondary Students (Classes XI t0 XII) 4. Maximum No. of Models/Posters in each District Fair: Maximum 180 models/posters (Gr.1- 75, Gr.2- 75, Gr.3- 30) 5. Maximum No. of Participants: Maximum 2 students + 1 guide teacher per model and only 1 per poster 6. Maximum no. of participants in each District level Fairs: (120 models X 3) = 360 for models and 60 for posters = Total 420 participants Guidelines for participation in the Science Fair A) School Projects (Group 1 & 2) Science Fair will be organised in every district of West Bengal jointly by the Dept. of Youth Services, Dept. of School Education, Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal and the state level Science Fair shall be organized in collaboration with Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India). District Level Science Fairs will be completed in every district of West Bengal within 31st August 2013. Selected models/Posters from each district will be invited to participate in West Bengal State Science Fair, which will be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium/ Kshudiram Anusilan Kendra, Kolkata during September 09 – 11, 2013. Best Model 2nd Best Model Total no. of members (maximum) per district: 2 levels x 3 participants x 2 models = 12 Last date for sending the list of models for participation in West Bengal State Level Science Fair is 2nd September 2013. Models will be judged by a panel of Judges on following criteria: 1.Technical Skill : 30 2. Creativity : 20 3. Quantum of works : 30 4. Chart display : 20 Total : 100 B) College Projects (Group 3) Participants College students from science streams of undergraduate level can participate in this Science Fair. Models prepared on any topic related to science & technology will be eligible to participate in the College level fair. Winning models shall be eligible for participation in the district level science fair. Models can be prepared individually involving one student or in a team involving maximum two students under the guidance of one teacher. From each district following two models will be selected for participation in the West Bengal State College Science Fair. Best Model 2nd Best Model Total no. of members (maximum) per district: 3 x 2 models = 6 Last date for sending the list of models for participation in State Level Science Fair is 2nd September 2013. All the participating models will be judged by a panel of Judges on following criteria: 1.Technical Skill : 30 2. Originality in idea and application : 20 3. Depth of knowledge and Clarity : 30 4.
