State in dock over rescue and rehab of trafficked children RANCHI: The public interest litigation (PIL) filed before the Jharkhand high court seeking directives for rehabilitation of two minor girls of Murhu block in Khunti district has finally made the government accountable for coming up with an elaborate plan to deal with the issue of trafficking. The division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Tantia and Justice Aparesh Kumar has directed the government to come up with status reports on the steps taken to prevent trafficking and arrange for rehabilitation of the rescued children. Hearing the writ petition (1555/2013) filed by Gopi Nath Ghosh of Human Rights Law Network, the division bench had directed the petitioners on June 18 to file a detailed report on the status of trafficking and role of placement agencies across the state, in response to which a fact-finding team comprising social activists of HRLN, Jharkhand organization for human rights (Johar) and Birsa filed a list of 259 placement agencies working in the state, of which as many as 39 had cases related to trafficking of children. Counsel of the petitioner Anup Kumar said the list was submitted before the court in the form of an affidavit on July 6 and during further hearing of the matter, the court sought to know from the government if any action has been taken against the office bearers of the 39 placement agencies. "The court has also asked the government to file in detail the steps taken for the rescue and rehabilitation of the trafficked children and through an affidavit submit details of FIR lodged in cases of missing children as was directed by the Supreme Court in the course of hearing the case of Bachpan Bachao Andolan versus Union of India," Kumar said. Kumar said two minor girls, both victims of trafficking, managed to escape from New Delhi and reached Ranchi, following which the HRLN decided to pick up the issue of rehabilitation. Even their family members and villagers of the Murhu block in Khunti district had refused to take them back rehabilitation. "Initially the district legal services authority (DALSA) of Khunti district took up the matter of getting the girls treated and later HRLN moved a writ petition seeking direction of the court to government," Kumar said. timesofindia.indiatimes/city/ranchi/State-in-dock-over-rescue-and-rehab-of-trafficked-children/articleshow/21184692.cms
