Statement by Minister Michelle Rempel, in response to reports of violence at yesterdays demonstration in Calgary Freedom of expression and the right of peaceful protest are vital elements of a democratic society. Reports of the eruption of violence at yesterdays Palestinian rally in front of Calgarys city hall should be deeply concerning to all Canadians. Canadians should not be intimidated or physically attacked for expressing a point view, and anyone found to have participated in acts of violence against should bear the consequences of their actions. We urge anyone with information about the incidents in question to share it with Calgary police. In Canada, we uphold the principles of democracy and support other nations defending their right to the same. Our government remains steadfast in its support of Israels right to defend itself and its citizens against terrorist attacks by Hamas and other like-minded groups. -30-
