Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of Hugh Clifford “Cliff” Chadderton December 1, 2013 Toronto, Ontario Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the passing of Hugh Clifford Chadderton: “On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Hugh Clifford Chadderton. “Known to many Canadians as “Mr. Veteran,” Cliff Chadderton dedicated his life to protecting the interests and rights of veterans and their families. “A D-Day veteran who lost part of his right leg while in command of a company of The Royal Winnipeg Rifles in 1944, Mr. Chadderton believed strongly in the amputees helping amputees philosophy, and therefore played a key role in the development of innovative programs and services for war, civilian and child amputees. He is widely recognized as the founder of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. “For his lifelong dedication of service to others, Mr. Chadderton received numerous awards, including Companion in the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, induction into the Canada Veterans Hall of Valour and the Terry Fox Hall of Fame, the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, and the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal. “Canada has lost a great man but his legacy will live on in the many people whose lives he has touched.”
