Statement of Sierra Club Michigan Chapter on Gov. Snyder’s Veto of Senate Bill 78 The following statement can be attributed to Sierra Club Michigan Chapter Chair David Holtz: “Gov. Rick Snyder’s decision to veto anti-biodiversity legislation preserves the role of science in environmental decision-making in Michigan and protects Michigans natural areas and our economy. Sierra Club urged the governor to listen to the advice of 133 top scientists who wrote him about the importance to Michigan of maintaining biodiversity. As the scientific community pointed out, Senate Bill 78 would have changed Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act in ways that would have fundamentally altered conservation and emphasized the need for more extraction while removing a requirement that Michigan’s forests should be managed in a way that ensures their recovery. It is gratifying that the governor was convinced to veto the bill and avoid the consequences this legislation would have had for maintaining healthy and sustainable ecosystems in Michigan for today and for future generations of Michiganders.” ##
