(Stefanie) Two dogs poisoned in Elsburg. A family in Elsburg woke up to find two of their dogs poisoned, last Wednesday. “We have two dogs; the puppy sleeps inside the house and the older one sleeps outside,” said Tessa Vos. “My daughter, Anuskha Kleynhans, usually takes Hercules (the four-month-old puppy) out early in the morning and it was when she was on her way to work that she noticed her puppy vomiting, shaking and just not looking well, and she went over to see what was wrong.” “It was when she attended to the puppy that we started looking for Rufes (the older dog) and found him lying dead in the yard.” “My daughter rushed the puppy to the vet, but he died on the way. “Looking at Rufes’s state, it appeared that he died in the early hours of the morning.” Vos told the GCN that they found two fish that, they believe, were used to poison the dogs. “There were two fish, with black particles, wrapped in plastic and newspapers; the one fish hadn’t been eaten and the other was eaten by our dogs,” she explained. Vos added that this was not their first experience of dog poisoning. “About four years ago I had dogs that were also poisoned with Two Step, and I heard that there were two dogs, about two streets away, that were also recently poisoned,” she said. Vos said they contacted the Elsburg SAPS but didn’t open a case. “I would like to thank the Elsburg police for their quick response, but we didn’t open a case because there was nothing stolen, so we just wanted to alert them to this crime,” she explained. “They assured us that they will do regular and frequent patrols in the area.” Vos and Anuskha were devastated by the incident. “We were in such a state; I mean we loved, looked after and cared for these dogs as if they were our children, they were a huge part of our family and it makes you wonder how a person could do such a terrible thing,” Vos said. She advised residents to be alert, keep their pets as safe as possible and search their yards on a frequent basis, especially before letting their pets out.
