The more characters you have in a password, the more expensive it is in time and money for anyone (hackers/government/nerdy teen) to crack it. 12 characters of mixed numbers, caps and symbols would require equipment costing many millions of dollars in order to uncover/break the code over a period of months. Always include a variety of characters in your password, have a [slightly] unique password for every site you are registered for.
