Stephanie Rutt, a favored of Saint Theresa and all good souls, always inspires my faith and prayerfulness. So after talking to her I shared this thought: I wanted to hear the heavenly choirs I was told as a child that greet us at the doorway to heaven. My teacher said, Listen to your heartbeat and learn gratitude; it is life; it is a gift. I listened and became calm, centered and gradually heard the sound within the sound, and then the stillness that precedes all sound. There, poised on the threshold between stillness and the One, I could hear the heartbeat of the angels. Each beat a mantra! The mantra was everywhere and yet without sound. It gradually rose up and past the angels’ lips into a whisper and took form. It came into me not through my ears but via my heart. My heart echoed that beat; took rhythm with life. Then my ears opened and I could hear that choir that sings in every cell and atom and raise my voice, lend my tongue and dance the delight of Spirit gifted by Grace. Such is my practice of mantra and how I found the doorway to the sacred. Gurucharan Khalsa
