Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais and others have said Columbo is the best TV show ever. Whenever anyone said it I always thought What about the Rockford Files? Columbo was a Sherlock Holmes type, so much smarter than everyone else that in effect you are watching an unrealistic superhero. However, the Rockford Files is like watching Film Noir crossed with black comedy. And with as many clever plot twists as a 1950s Hitchcock film. What more can one ask for out of their idiot box? Oh alright, maybe less car chases and love interests. But still it never jumped the shark. Even the reunion telemovies were great. 30 years old and I watch it more regularly than Seinfeld and the Simpsons. Not sure if I can express my love for it better than that. RIP Jim!
