Steve Washington packed Postscript last night, August 9, 2014, at the Madison Hotel. This elegant venue has become a magnet for top name vocalists in the greater Washington DC area. Steve presented a three set show filled with songs from many genres. He is extremely comfortable with Jazz Standards, Pop, Bossa and R&B. When he turns up the heat on his distinctive brand of showmanship I can only be describe it in one way, Las Vegas panache! Postscript could hardly contain Steves enthusiasm as he serenaded and romanced the capacity crowd. Hey Steve! We need a bigger boat! The air was filled with squeals, cheers and applause from the receptive audience. Musical accompaniment for this tour de force was provided by Wayne Wilentz on piano and David Marsh on bass and percussion. Both accompanists are virtuosos, but you have to know and see David play to understand his instrumentation style. Haha! My favorite songs of the evening are a cinch to list. All of them. However, the standouts were, Moondance, Mas Que Nada, Stand By Me and Without A Song. The showstopper was Caravan. Ive never heard anyone sing this Juan Tizol Standard the way Steve Washington did it. Amazing. Steve started in a tempo and feel unfamiliar to me. I expected swing, vocalese and then back to swing. No, too easy. Thats not Steves style. After the first line of lyrics I knew I was in for an exciting ride. I instinctively checked if my seat belt was buckled. Steve double clutched his way through the song at full tilt. At times I told myself hes going into that curve too fast, hes gonna go off the roaaaddd, then suddenly he tapped the brakes only to rev his engine again on the next high note. Not sure what kind of fuel he was burning, but his engine was at full throttle even after he got the checkered flag and crossed the finish line to a roaring crowd. How good is that! Wow! What a show Steve! More like this. And more male vocalists at the Madison Hotel too. loewshotels/Madison Tim Gavagan SINGING FRIENDS Washington DC USA
