Stop watching ice bucket challenges and watch this video. Its easy, as a white person, to say there isnt a problem with racism or discrimination in this country. We have these feelings because we have the privilege of changing the channel or leaving the room or simply walking away. We do not know what it is like to live oppressed. Sure, we may have been oppressed due to our beliefs or our orientations and so forth, but those can (ultimately, if chosen) be hidden. Race - which is a source of identity - cannot be hidden. Saying we see all people the same is (I learned from this video) actually a slap in the face. I am tired of hearing about race issues in this country. Not because I dont think it isnt an issue (because I wholeheartedly believe it is), but because Im frustrated by the fact that we can progress in so many areas and claim to be so open minded in so many ways yet ignore one of the central inadequacies of our society. I want race issues to no longer be discussed - not because they are being ignored but because we have solved the issue of racism in this country. I dont know what the answer is, but I would love to have dialogue with my Facebook friends of color who can shed light on what and how I can make a difference - seriously.
