Stories like this are APPALLING and make me sick to my stomach. Austin uses an iPad with a Speech App to assist him with communication, though he is very motivated to talk with his mouth as he likes to call it. After the first few weeks of school this year, he told me that his teachers (Im still not sure who exactly) were shutting off the Edit button for him to add words/phrases. Seriously??? Not only does he have difficulty with speaking clearly but they removed the edit button to only make things harder? Austin, like all other children, should be able to speak up and speak out whenever he chooses, verbally or with his AAC device. You cannot remove the edit button from a neurotypical childs verbal speech, so why do it to someone who relies so heavily on such technology?? Prayers to Dakota and his family. No child should have their accommodations taken away from them, regardless of what supports or devices they may be. fox4kc/2014/12/16/north-kansas-city-school-takes-away-blind-childs-cane-replaces-it-with-pool-noodle/
