THIS WAS IN TOM TAYLOR TODAY.... Confession, sped-up - Dwight Douglas says When I was the PD of rock WYDD in Pittsburgh back in the 70s we used to run a show called the King Biscuit Flower Hour every Sunday night. One time, I discovered that the tape for that week’s show was somehow bulk-erased. I was in a panic. No way to get the show in time. I got the syndicator’s ad from Rolling Stone magazine that listed all the stations and noticed that a station in Youngstown ran the show. I called them and asked if I could drive up there to make a copy. They said sure, as long as I brought my own tape. We made the drive, got their show master and proceeded to dub it onto another tape. When I finished, I auditioned the new dub and realized that the copy was running a little fast. I wasn’t about to run that sped-up version on my station, so, yes, I admit it, I took their master and placed the fast copy in their box. I felt so guilty about leaving the smaller station with the sped-up version, but thats what I did. Well, I lived in a high-rise apartment on Mt. Washington, so I was able to hear both stations. When I listened to WYDD that Sunday night, the King Biscuit show sounded great. I listened to the Youngstown station and the show sounded fine there, too. I then realized that their machine in the production studio was running fast, to compensate for their studio machines that ran slow. And now I have finally told the story. Guilt relieved.
