*Story time* It was late at night in the town of Madinah. Most of the townspeople were asleep. Ameer ul Momineen Umar bin Khattab (RA) was walking in the streets of the city. It was his usual practice to patrol the streets and suburbs of Madinah to watch the interests of the people, and attend to their needs. When he got tired, he decided to lean against a wall to rest. It was then that he heard the following conversation: A woman was saying: “Mix some water with the milk”. “No, the caliph has forbidden anyone to mix water with milk and then to sell it,” a young girl replied. “Is the Ameer observing you here? Do as I say,” said the woman. “The Ameer is not watching, but the Rabb of Umar is watching,” the young girl answered back. Umar noted the house and then sent someone to see who that girl was, and to whom she was speaking, and whether she had a husband. He was informed that the other woman was her mother, and neither of them had a husband. The next morning Umar (RA) called his sons and said: “There is a pious girl and I desire that one of you should take her as a wife. If I were not old, I would have married her”. One of his sons, Asim, agreed to marry her. Thereupon with the consent of the girl and her mother, the marriage took place, and the girl became the daughter-in-law of the Caliph. And with this marriage Umm Asim, mother of the great Caliph, Umar bin Abdul Aziz was born. It is said that if there ever was a noble caliph after the Rightly guided Caliphs, such a man was Umar bin Abdul Aziz. And he inherited the noble qualities of that girl who married the Caliphs son, and those of Umar (RA) who had the eye to discern the nobler qualities of sterling character in a poor girl! SubhanAllah, it is amazing how a good deed or an act of taqwa can go a long way and have such amazing consequences!
