Stoughton’s Dawe and South Schools recognized in MA School Breakfast Challenge Two Stoughton Elementary Schools were recognized in the Massachusetts School Breakfast Challenge (MSBC) in April 2014, for increasing and sustaining student participation in the School Breakfast Program (SLP) by 35% from October 2012 to March 2013. The Dawe and South Elementary Schools were among 179 schools from across the state to receive this recognition. They received stickers for each school to display on the Massachusetts School Breakfast Challenge posters. “These schools seized the unique opportunity to prevent hunger from negatively affecting student success by focusing on increasing school breakfast participation,” said Kathleen Millett, the Executive Director for the Office for Nutrition, Health and Safety Programs in a letter to Edward Gilbert, the Food Director for the Stoughton Public Schools. “Each school has three more opportunities to surpass or sustain the 35 percent increase and earn more stickers! Schools that achieve and sustain a 35 percent increase in participation by December 2014 will be recognized statewide.” Edward Gilbert, who has made increasing breakfast participation at the schools a top priority for 2014 said, I am happy to see we are moving in the right direction. We are not done until all the children who want to have a nutritious breakfast do so at home or in school.” “We need to build on our early success and reach more students who are hungry when they arrive at school. --- Dawe School photo: Edward Gilbert, Food Director Stoughton Public Schools, and Dawe School Cafeteria Manager, Joyce Spencer.
