Stripe Rust Update Situation Update: It is time to scout for wheat stripe rust and plan for early-season sprays. Stripe rust was found in the southern Willamette Valley during the period of January 7-12, about three weeks earlier than had previously been recorded. Temperatures in December 2014 were five degrees above normal, and December temperatures are a crucial driver of stripe rust: warm Decembers facilitate pathogen survival and shorten its generation time. The early start to the rust season may allow for an extra generation of disease increase, a critical factor for rapidly spreading rusts. Rust sightings were in both experimental plots and commercial fields planted relatively early (September through the first 10 days of October). Rust was found on individual leaves of Goetze, WB 1529, Foote, and Kaseberg. Rust had not developed into easy to spot “hot spots” yet, so identifying infected fields can be difficult. Rust was not seen in later-planted, direct-tilled fields. Rust has not yet been sighted in the northern Willamette Valley, though it is expected to occur. Weather in the remainder of the year can still influence rust, but the early start of the rust season suggests that vigilance be called for in 2015. Recommendations: Fields planted prior to Oct 15 and/or to susceptible or moderately susceptible varieties such as Goetze, Tubbs 06, Mary, Kaseberg, SY Ovation, and LCS Art Deco should be prioritized for rust scouting. These fields will likely require an early fungicide spray this year. Fields planted after Oct 15 and/or to moderately susceptible or resistant varieties such as Kaseberg, SY Ovation, LCS Art Deco, Bobtail, and Rosalyn should also be scouted. These fields may require an early spray if rust is detected in specific fields of these varieties early on or if significant rust is found in the vicinity early in the season. Early sprays will likely not be required on resistant varieties such as Bobtail and Rosalyn, but these varieties should still be scouted to guard against the potential for new rust races to appear.
