Stroke is the leading cause of long-term severe disability and the second leading cause of death in Botswana (AIDS-related deaths are the number 1 cause). Roughly 30-40% of first time strokes are cryptogenic, or due to unknown cause. It is necessary to establish the cause of stroke to determine functional prognosis, decrease the risk of future strokes, and select appropriate preventative care. Currently, in Botswana and in many other countries, serious gaps exist between in the clinical knowledge of cryptogenic stroke and how to treat, manage, and prevent the occurrence—leaving patients at risk for disabling strokes or even death. At Touch A Life Wazha Centre we educate people on how to take care of themselves to help prevent a stroke.
