Strong leader? Given India’s size, demography, cultural and language disparity, it is perceived, the country needs a strong leader. But it is not the case, more so now. So far the only strong leader India has had was Indira Gandhi, a strong-willed woman known for her sometimes curt decisions. If you look back, as Indira Gandhi’s emergency showed; a strong leader is not always best for India. And now the person increasingly perceived to provide such leadership is N Modi, a person who always peppers his election rally speeches with me, my and mine, which smells of egoistic attitude. In this era of coalition politics and increasingly assertive regionalism, we need not a strong but sensible leader, who not only is decisive but also inclusive, taking into account the legitimate demands, needs and aspirations of all 29 states of the union, taking cognizance of the plurality of languages, ethnic groups and communities. Who will fit the bill? Who will be the next leader and PM-hopeful? Do you have any guesses or suggestions?
