Success! Thank YOU all of you who spent your time, lent your hands and wished us well to help us reach our goal of distributing ~5,000 wraps for Langar on the Diag. On a sunny Friday abuzz with activity on the heart of Michigan campus many volunteers inspired passersby to taste a deliciously spiced chickpea wrap while hearing about the Amritsar Sustainable Nourishment Project. People stopped and sat down to enjoy their meal in the sunshine, others tucked their wrap in their bags for a handy after-class snack. Some watched the impressive images of the India trip on nearby screens and posters, others saw how the wrap was assembled at the video demo table. Many had questions about the GIEU project, about why free food? about what is ‘Langar?’ about how can I donate to this cause?’ (answer: by serving others). At mid-day we were treated to the energizing beat of 2 dhol (drum) players who volunteered their talents and got a group up and dancing! We especially thank the community of the Plymouth Gurdwara who sent out a request for sevadars (volunteers) to lend a hand in any way they could. Your generosity of time, the use of the spacious, beautiful kitchen overlooking a serene garden and your untiring efforts made this event possible. Students from UM, Wayne State, Mothers, Grandmothers, Fathers, Grandfathers, Children, Aunties and the Gurdwara ‘Brothers’ themselves participated in creating chopping, peeling, arranging, folding, washing, and communing to make the preparation experience a total joy. The GIEU students who went to India in June and had their first pre-India ‘Langar’ back in April were welcomed back to the Plymouth Gurdwara as they offered to serve their shifts to help make wraps. By 11 pm on Thursday night, 5,000 wraps had been neatly tucked their foil blankets chilled to the right temperature, prepared to be distributed early on Friday. The “Lesson from the Golden Temple: Sustainable Nourishment Project” is, With the Spirit of Seva People Can Achieve the Impossible.
