Sugar, sugar…oh, honey, honey! You may be a candy girl, but here’s why you need to break the habit! Here’s how the sugar thing works: There are two main types of sugars. First, there’s sugar that occurs naturally in foods like milk, vegetables and fruits. This sugar may be fine in reasonable quantities. (We know that many people have intolerance to lactose, the sugar in milk). These sugars usually come with loads of polyphenols and other micronutrients. The other kind of sugar (also known as stripped carbohydrate) is refined from sugar cane, dates and beets, and then added to foods to boost sweetness and desirability. Added sugars (often in the form of high-fructose corn syrup) stress the proteins in your body to make them less functional. As a result, they directly age your immune and arterial systems, even your joints. And there’s more: High-fructose corn syrup (found in sodas and many packaged foods) increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Have we convinced you to stay away from the stuff? If you can’t go cold turkey, start by cutting out all sugar-sweetened beverages. These sweet drinks are the worst offenders. They’re typically consumed without food or prior to eating, which means they’re absorbed superfast, causing your blood sugar to spike, which damages your arteries big-time. Stick to naturally occurring sugars like those found in fruits and veggies (if you’ve ever tried a roasted and caramelized sweet potato, you’ll know what we mean). Soon you’ll see just how sweet life can be — without added sugar.
