Summer 1981 I was 18. Got a job working at Woolies in the restaurant and loved it. We wore brown/cream nylon uniforms with a little pleated headband (like out of Lyons Tea Rooms or HiDeHi). In the mornings Id peel hundreds of boiled eggs for the salad in a prep area. This backed onto the Tower Circus and you could smell the elephants up the lift shaft. Then when it got busy Id be on the til. Had to memorise the prices of everything but mainly it was tray after tray of pie, mash and peas/fish and chips with mushy peas, pot of tea and a trifle. Got to make those Crusha banana milkshakes too... Then beautiful new romantic boys from school would come in - flicking their wedge haircuts, hands deep in the pockets of their Bowie pants... good times...
