Summer Day 32: There have been many videos of police brutality of late finding their way to the internet. While watching them, particularly the most recent depicting the murder of Eric Garner, is very difficult, I feel they are of great value in our fight to dismantle the brutal police state that is hell-bent on finding any reason to be violent, especially towards people of color and those with less money. I recognize that there are some great, civic-minded police officers out there; people who truly serve their communities. But I am not convinced they are in the majority. Rather I feel that the police departments of our country attract, retain, and, to some extent, recruit people (particularly white men) who are looking for a semi-legal outlet for their violent tendencies. In fact, with so much of society openly railing against the current police state, one could draw the conclusion that only the truly anti-social would aspire to become police officers. Protect yourself by knowing your rights. Protect your friends by educating them. Hold police accountable by taping your interactions and sharing them with as many people as you can. Follow up with letters and petitions to your elected officials. I am not a violent person by nature. Far from it. Im not to the point where I feel all-out war on the police is the answer. 187 on the undercover cop is a great lyric, but short-sighted in practice. That said, if my wife or children were treated the way this guy treats this woman, crime or not, Id feel completely justified in beating his ass to a bloody pulp and leaving him for the buzzards.
