Summer programs are being applied as an attempt to do away with the epidemic of obesity and malnutrition. What must be addressed first is the question of where is the epidemic hitting the hardest. The answer is in low income areas. Name one kid in low income areas that can afford to go to summer camp. The only summer activity set aside for them is summer school because they are not given the tools to succeed. They have poor learning conditions, little to no text books and computers, and are not given the right kind of food to help them concentrate and grow both mentally and physically. One thing that is important is getting people in the right habit. Even if they are given better food choices, will they take advantage of them? I hope so. A better self-image must be promoted along with a better sense of self-worth. This can be done on television, radio, online, and by simply encouraging all humans to think and act in a more humane manner towards all, no matter how different they may be.
