Super wicked double bill at the Reading Cinemas! Part 2 DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Wow. This was Hollywood hitting a homerun out of the ballpark. Great followup to RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and even grander and more operatic in scale. Director Matt Reeves has a sure and confident storytelling style, guiding us through the wary and sadly soon the warlike interactions between Caesars ape tribe and the straggling human survivors of a worldwide genocidal virus. There are bad apples in both human and ape camps, and so a peaceful mingling proves too far beyond the reach of either species. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell and Jodi Smit-McPhee are among the benvolent humans, with Gary Oldman as a more pragmatically inclined leader determined to save his own kind no matter the cost. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, and WETA Digital have seriously outdone themselves with their magnificent and hyper detailed ape animations. I cant even call them animated, they were so lifelike in many scenes that I had no doubt of their tangible existence. See this film and see it big! I did the 2D version but it was shot in 3D, so that might be even more spectacular depending on the cinema. Speaking of which, I will sorely miss the sweet new digital cinemas in NJ. Fort Waynes Carmike is way behind the curve, I will have to find alternatives out there unless they really upgrade their systems.
