Surprised and pleased to see the following philosophy stripped straight from the homeschoolers bible in an email from Douglas County School District. I hope it means that the changes they have made thus far are the first of many. America’s system of education was built for another time and for another objective. As explained by Dr. Tony Wagner in his book, The Global Achievement Gap, the American education system was created more than 100 years ago with the goal of preparing students for the needs of the booming Industrial Revolution. The expectation then was that only a few students would be college-bound, since the majority of the workforce would be employed in factories. Our system exceled [sic] making America an economic powerhouse in the world. Times, however, have changed—and so too must our education system. Today many of those routine jobs have been automated or outsourced. However, despite the fact the world has changed and students have changed, many schools still resemble the assembly lines of the past. Schools are still pretty much organized on factory lines; ringing bells, separate facilities, separated into different subjects. We still educate children by batches, said Sir Ken Robinson, during his TED Talk Changing Education Paradigms. We put them through the system by age group. Why do we do that? Why is there this assumption that the most important things that kids have in common is how old they are? source: https://dcsdk12.org/district/choice-for-students?utm_source=Newsline+-+October+8%2C+2014&utm_campaign=Newsline+-+October+8%2C+2014&utm_medium=email
