Surprising Pathways to Career Success Commission on Children, Youth & Families to Host “Technical Education Night” on April 29 at Costick Center Did you know that a sizable percentage of licensed skilled workers such as electricians, dental hygienists, and x-ray technicians earn more than the average college graduate? The Farmington Hills/Farmington Commission on Children, Youth & Families invites high school students and their parents to consider different pathways to career success at a special “Technical Education Night” on Tuesday, April 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. By the end of the decade, manufacturing and health care sectors will generate millions of high demand new jobs that do not require a four-year college degree. Solid career gains are expected in positions that require technical skills, certifications, and apprenticeships. Participants at the Technical Education Night will learn about opportunities available to those who follow “nontraditional” paths. The focus will be on job satisfaction, earnings potential, reducing college debt load, and exploring technical education as a step toward a career or toward additional education at a later point. Speakers at the event will challenge the “status quo” that pushes students who may not be ready or even interested into a four-year academic track. Presentations will feature testimonials from young men and women who have achieved success in technical careers such as operating engineering, cosmetology, and web design. Panelists will include: • Amy Flynn - Post-Secondary Transition Consultant, Oakland Schools • Pamela Micaleff - Career Counselor, Oakland Community College (OCC) • Charles Kurzer - Counseling Department Chair, OCC • Naomi Khalil – Director of Technical Education, Farmington Public Schools Through videos, Q & A sessions, and breakout groups, participants will learn about career funding options, scholarship possibilities, and Michigan jobs data. Parents will discover that their children can become marketable, employable, and highly regarded in new career areas which may not have been previously considered. Refreshments will be served. Registration is not necessary and there is no residency requirement for participants. For more information, contact Ed Cherkinsky at 248-661-5114 or echerkinsk@aol.
