Sydney Aussie Icon Vintage Wine Dinner Saturday, 29th November 2014 Steel Bar & Grill 60 Carrington StSydney NSW Champagne NV Billecart Salmon, Brut Reserve, Champagne, France Chardonnay 2001 Giaconda, Chardonnay, Beechworth, Victoria The palate is certainly grand with intensity and power encased in a tight frame of acidity. Lingering mineral notes remind me of the 1992 Chardonnay. Oak plays a supporting role but the sheer depth of fruit swarms all over the oak. As with past vintages, the palate is a combination of wheat, spice and stone fruits wrapped in a creamy texture. The synergy between vineyard and the maker is clearly evident. Another superb Giaconda Chardonnay. Rhine Riesling 1993, Leo Buring, DW33 Watervale, Rhine Riesling, Clare Valley, South Australia Between 1965 and 2000, Leo Buring was Australias foremost producer of Rieslings, with a rich legacy left by former winemaker John Vickery. Cabernet Sauvignon 1996 Seppelt, Dorrien Cabernet Sauvignon, Barossa Valley, South Australia Typical of previous Dorrien cabernets, this wine has the same rich concentrated ripe cabernet characters with hints of dustiness. Blackcurrant and underlying earthiness and chocolate are complemented by attractive vanilla oak. Excellent integration of oak has produced a full-bodied wine with wonderfully rich concentrated berry fruit and lingering varietal character. It has well integrated charry oak, firm tannin, excellent structure and length of flavor. 1998 Katnook, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, South Australia Totally opaque, crimson, black color. Superb nose, almost perfumed, with aroma of violets, cedar, blackcurrant and dark chocolate. Tight knit palate structure, yet packed with an abundance of blackcurrant, mint, chocolate and mocca flavors. Excellent length and concentration of flavor. Fine grained dry tannins, perfect balance, with exceptionally long aftertaste of blackcurrant, cedar, plum and spice. Shiraz Viognier 1998 Clonakilla, Shiraz Viognier, Murrumbateman, ACT Huon Hooke in an article in the SMH on judging this wine “Number 21, a shiraz blend: fabulous wine, very spicy, gamy, complex, probably cool-climate. I’d give that a gold medal, straight up.” I can almost feel the glow on the back of my neck from four beaming faces. “Yep, That’s our unanimous top” says Purbrick. “Isn’t it a rip-snorter?” Shiraz 1996 Leasingham, Classic Clare Shiraz, Clare Valley, South Australia A monument of a wine. Magnificent, memorable, mouthfilling and a must! Totally opaque crimson black colour. Superb nose of super ripe plums, vanilla, liquorice, spice, blackberry and blackcurrant concentrate. This wine redefines the term big. Totally mouthfilling, the wine fills every cavity of the mouth and explodes in a volcano of active olfactory molecules. Vanilla, toasted oak, dark chocolate and huge blackpepper back palate flavours. Perfect balance. Magnificent fine blackberry and ripe blood plum aftertaste. Outstanding! 1998 Noon, Reserve Shiraz, Barossa Valley, South Australia The opaque black/blue-colored 1998 Shiraz displays a fascinating bouquet of violets, black raspberry and blackberry liqueur, cedar, fruitcake, and pepper. Surreal levels of glycerin and richness are present in this full-bodied, surprisingly supple-textured wine. The finish lasts for several minutes. This is a tour de force winemaking effort, and it performed better from the bottle opened forty-eight hours prior to the tasting. This is an exceptional wine from an Australian genius! RPJr 98pts 1981 Penfolds, Grange Shiraz, Multi Regional, South Australia Winemaker John Duval called the 1981 a “big, tannic Grange.” It is just that, a very powerful, inky, purple-colored wine that is still almost primary and unevolved in its surprising youthfulness. This formidably endowed, broodingly backward, thick, full-bodied, muscular wine has a boatload of chocolate-infused plum, caramel, and cassis flavors. With high tannin, huge grip, and some propensity toward austerity, this is a monster Grange! 97pts Fortified Botrytis Semillon NV 10yr Old De Bortoli, Black Noble, Botrytis Semillon, Riverina, Victoria “Arguably unique in the world of wine, and certainly very esoteric. It should be chilled, drunk within a week of opening and a little goes a long way. It is fortified, and has long barrel-aged Noble One as its base; super-intense, yet elegant, and shows no hint of volatile acidity; flavours of exotic spices and mandarin.” 94pts James Halliday The above wines will be accompanied by a matched 4 course dinner with Canapes on arrival specially prepared for this Vintage Wine Dinner by the Steel Bar & Grill Restaurant team. As with all Rare Wine Dinners seats are limited so book now to avoid disappointment. ift.tt/1pGrkOd
