TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH: Daily renewal for busy Catholics Sunday, September 8 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Lend a hand In the Okinawan language two characters came to make up the word karate: kara (“empty”) and te (“hand”). The name of this martial art, then, is literally “the way of the empty hand”—and that isn’t only the open hand you might hit someone with! Tadashi Nakamura, the founder of the Seido form of karate, said: “When we love freely, we can give and share everything. We need hold on to nothing. Our hands can be empty.” Jesus was no martial artist, but nonetheless his way of life was one of an “open hand”: to empty himself in order to give himself. Those who would call themselves his followers should be ready to do the same. TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 9:13-8b; Philemon 9-10, 12-17; Luke 14:25-33 (129) “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” CONTRIBUTORS Clarissa Aljentera, Alice Camille, Daniel Grippo, Father Larry Janowski, O.F.M., Evelyn Mautner, Siobhán O’Neill, Joel Schorn, Patrice J.
