TALE OF A NEST -- A bluebird built a nest in an old bird feeder only a couple of feet off the ground on a pine tree trunk. Five chicks were fed well. A dog tall enough to stand on her hind legs discovered the nest and a barrier consisting of a ladder wrapped in chicken wire was constructed with a hole cut in it for the mother to come and go. Yesterday I saw two chicks on a step of the ladder. Apparently they found the space below the wire and went on their way. Two hours later all were gone, including the mother, leaving the proverbial empty nest. (6/26/13 Peace Valley, Missouri)
