TANNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY Tanning beds have come a long way - TopicsExpress

TANNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY Tanning beds have come a long way from the early editions and have since become smarter environments to soak in rays rather than tanning under the natural sun. Presently, the largest tanning bed manufacturers fund an entire research and development team dedicated to constantly developing and improving the technology of these machines. Although it is difficult to control your exposure of ultra-violet rays in the natural sun outside, in a tanning bed the mixture of UVB and UVA rays is carefully calculated and time limits are set, thus limiting your risk of encountering a burn. These rays activate the melanin underneath the skin (the pigment responsible for darkening our skin color), acting as the body’s natural sunscreen. This is why people with a tan are able to stay out in the sun for longer periods without having to apply or reapply sunscreen. Sunburns occur when the body is not given enough time to produce the appropriate melanin needed to protect itself from excessive amounts of ultra-violet light, and this is why strict time limits are set on the tanning beds. Because of the new innovative technology, indoor tanning has become much safer, more efficient, and a viable resource to get and maintain adequate levels of vitamin D.
