#TAS #Weather #News #Corp Flooding rain threatening Tasmania A low pressure system will start to affect eastern Tasmania by the end of this week, potentially delivering more rain and stronger winds than a potential cyclone will do for the Top End this weekend. A weak low is currently building over southeast Australia which is likely to intensify as it moves south. When the low moves from the mainland to Bass Strait is should intensify and continue to move southeast, affecting Tasmania the most between Friday and Sunday. Eastern Tasmania has already had a lot of rain in the past few weeks, leaving the ground fairly saturated and increasing the risk of flooding this weekend. Most of the East Coast district has already had twice its monthly average of rainfall this month, with the approaching system likely to bring the heaviest rain in several months and lead to the wettest November in more than 50 years for some places. The low has potential to bring widespread falls of 100-to-200 millimetres of rain to the east of the state. Hobart may receive its heaviest rain in more than two-and-a-half years. Strong winds are also a high risk for many of the coastal areas throughout the upcoming days, with possible wind speeds of up to 70-80km/h. Gale warnings have already been issued for the Central North Coast and Banks Strait and Franklin Sound and strong wind warnings for remaining coasts for Thursday. From Friday warnings are likely to mention gale for the east coast. Rain and wind should ease from Monday as the low moves further southeast, away from Tasmania, allowing a high pressure system to take overs.
